The Anglican Union for the Propagation of the Gospel is an international confraternity of oratories, a Society of Apostolic Life. Unlike religious orders, members make promises through a shared Rule of Life rather than taking vows. Our mission is to promote and support mission and ministry within the local and global church, fostering the spread of the Christian faith in orthodox Anglican and ecumenical contexts.
Our members are orthodox Anglicans who live out the catholic faith with evangelical zeal, guided by the Holy Spirit and adhering to the historic faith of the early church. Clergy within the oratories engage in diverse ministries, including parish work, chaplaincy in various settings (communities, prisons, hospitals), and service in other social institutions. We also provide theological training with our Episcopal Patrons and Partners, organize formation events, retreats, and develop international partnerships.
It was founded by a group of leaders who were involved in a series of mission societies but who desired a frame of ministry that allowed for the Anglican Spiritual Tradition to be preserved and lived out in the context of a rule of life, but not a religious order, to carry the Christian faith into the world in the spirit of the following biblical mandates.
While the Anglican Union is a legally independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, it functions as a Religious Society under the patronage of Anglican Communion bishops who are in good standing in the Anglican Communion and offer canonical and missional partnership with the oratories.
The Anglican Union employs a collegial and conciliar governance model, featuring a Consultative Council composed of Patrons/Partners, Prefects, clergy, and lay members. The Confraternity is led by a Prefect, assisted by a Provost and a Council of Clergy delegated by the Consistory Council of Patron Bishops, who provide direction and vision. This group is chaired by a Dean, of episcopal rank considered "first among equals." Currently, the Dean is Bishop Raphael of the Diocese of Ruvuma, ACT.
We recognize a shift in the religious landscape, marked by increasing religious pluralism and declining Christian participation in the world. Our theological mandate centers on:
As a global, collegial fellowship of clergy and laity, we explore how to reintroduce Jesus Christ as relevant "Good News" to the world. We believe that by nurturing Christian values internationally through our membership, and by presenting faith in Jesus Christ through prayer, formation, works of mercy, and ecumenical partnerships, we can revitalize Christianity in people's lives.
